Arkansas trucking tax break delayed by a year

Created: Thursday, March 1st, 2012 03:01 pm

The Joint Budget Committee of the Arkansas House recently ruled to delay the implementation of a proposal until July 1, 2013, which is expected to provide a tax break for the state's trucking companies on the purchase of large commercial trucks.

After the ruling, House Spokesperson Robert Moore told a group of reporters that trucking companies should not be worried, and the House only voted to delay the effective date of the legislation because the expected $4 million in tax revenue can be used to repair the state's roads.

Despite the delay, trucking companies in Arkansas can still think about improving fleet management efforts, including the purchase of new trucks. When it takes effect, the sales tax exemption will help offset the rising cost of fuel faced by trucking companies.

"They're excited. I mean, anytime you can save $600 on tagging your truck in Arkansas, they're excited," Gary Barnes, a salesman at Peterbilt Truck Center, told Little Rock, Arkansas, CBS affiliate KTHV. about the tax exemption. "You know fuel is over $4 a gallon. They're saying it might get $5, $5.50 by summer. It is hard for truckers to make a living."
