ATA releases latest Trends' report
The American Trucking Associations recently released this year's edition of the ATA American Trucking Trends report, which outlines some of the facts and figures that tell the story about today's trucking industry.
Among the report's findings: The trucking industry employs roughly 6.8 million people; 90 percent of trucking companies deploy six or fewer trucks; and trucks consumed approximately 37.2 billion gallons of diesel fuel in 2011.Fleet management has also shown improvement in recent years, with all trucks traveling nearly 400 billion miles over the past year.
"The information in this year’s edition clearly indicates that trucking is the driving force behind our great, and improving, economy," said Bill Graves, president and CEO of the ATA. "Safe, reliable and efficient motor carriers enable businesses throughout the entire supply chain to keep inventories lean, thereby saving the economy billions of dollars each year."
While this report showed some of the recent trends developing in the trucking industry, Torque News discussed how the industry would like to end its reliance on crude oil sources. A number of trucking companies throughout the nation are experimenting with alternative oil sources like natural gas, electricity and hydrogen fuel cells to cut down on air pollution, according to the source.
