ATA asks for partnership with government officials to aid trucking security

As with most professional fleet management owners, trucking safety is a top priority among their drivers. While certain laws and regulations help enforce these precautions, the American Trucking Association is warning the government to not pass an excessive number of rules.

Money and effort may be better used in the industry itself to ensure equipment is secure and drivers are trained well, says the ATA. With new bills being passed about cross-border hauling, security is an important issue that has been addressed by both federal officials and trucking advocate groups.

The ATA wants to connect efforts between groups in order to encourage positive conditions for truckers who sometimes can be in risky situations while on the job.

Martin Rojas, ATA vice president of Security and Operations, says law enforcement may be less imperative compared to education and funding in actual security measures.

"Unfortunately, rather than augmenting the security of the transportation sector, the focus has been more on regulatory compliance than evaluating the impact of existing security requirements,” he told the House subcommittee on Transportation Security.
