9/11 memorial display protected by local trucker
A truck driver in Springfield, Massachusetts, has played a large role in the town’s remembrance of 9/11, as the anniversary of this tragic event approaches this weekend. William Arment drove his truck through the city’s streets with special cargo – a steel beam that was once part of the World Trade Center that fell after the attack back in 2001, reports The Republican.
Arment was a representative of the Charlie Arment Trucking company that is based in Springfield. When towns want to feature this type of display in their community, officials must find ways to transport the steel themselves from the airport, which can weigh up to 3,000 pounds. Arment volunteered to do this for free.
While keeping in mind truck safety, Arment used his experience and CDL training to carefully maneuver the large load down Main Street. The truck carrying the steel was escorted by local enforcement along its route, which eventually concluded at Forest park, where it will be on permanent display.
The entire event was sponsored by the Spirit of Springfield initiative, which began in the late 1980s as a way for supporting events within the city that gave pride to the people who live in this large urban region, reports the organization’s website.
