Truckers try new smartphone apps

Modern technology continually simplifies the tasks that truckers need to accomplish every day while on the road. Even drivers are designing their own programs to help themselves and others best perform their jobs.

According to Overdrive Online, Jerry Wilks of John Christner Trucking in Oklahoma, released an application for the iPhone to help drivers at weigh station truck stops. Called Scale It, this app does the math for weary truckers and makes the entire weigh-in process easier. With trucking safety in mind, the program can keep track of the numbers and streamline the entire process.

Another mobile application that benefits truckers is TruckerNet, which is sponsored by Daimler Trucks North America in Oregon, Fleet Owner reports. Originally launched in March, the company recently introduced a BlackBerry version of the app that offers truckers a list of locations they can access to get service and parts for their vehicle. Those who use the app may link it to a partnering breakdown service to contact help.

Although truckers often undergo CDL training to begin their big rig careers, recurrent support through smartphone apps can supply protection and maintain trucker health on a continual basis.
