Truckers for Troops charity effort to begin this December

Created: Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 01:01 pm

Truck drivers know that the holiday season brings feelings of good cheer and camaraderie among those in the industry, but not all are fortunate enough to have a bountiful season. According to The Trucker, truck drivers nationwide are offering their support to the military by gathering gifts and necessities to be sent to those serving overseas, making the holidays a little easier and more joyous.

Sponsored by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA),this supplies drive is asking truckers, their families and event students to donate what they can for care packages that will be sent to the troops. Officials suggest items such as non-perishable foods, handmade cards, socks, toiletries and anything else non-breakable or useful to be included in the parcels. Most of the care packages will be sent to active-duty members who are stationed in locations like Afghanistan and Iraq.

Truckers who would like to participate can contact the OOIDA for details on the event, says the organization's website. The OOIDA estimates that nearly 40 percent of trucker on the road have served in the military, so this event is fitting for all those involved in the industry who would like to help out troops and their fellow drivers.
