Truckers battle the bulge

Created: Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 05:01 pm

The lifestyle of truckers often causes them to remain stationary for long periods of time, which can affect weight and diet if not properly monitored. According to The Detroit Free Press, Glenn Horack has batted obesity, which he attributes to truck driving.

There are several obstacles that can limit mobility and food choices for drivers. Dining is sometimes difficult when stopping at odd hours, which can cause inconsistent eating habits and high-fat choices.

However, Horack has overcome difficult odds and successfully lost 100 pounds last year with small, healthier changes to his routine.

Steve Stouffer's career was threatened because of being overweight and not passing his physical requirements, reports The Patriot News. By cutting out foods such as soda and candy, Stouffer has dropped 90 pounds and is back on the job.

He told the news source that the scare was a wakeup call to make changes in his behaviors, such as exercising and focusing on nutrition. Stouffer says his diabetes and sleep apnea problems are now manageable and he looks forward to a long life as a trucker.

"I am not planning on keeling over in seven years," he told the news source."I’ve got three wonderful grandchildren I want to watch grow up."
