Trucker health standards a big issue in the industry

Created: Friday, December 23rd, 2011 05:01 pm

Some advocate groups in support of trucker health are concerned about the physical wellness conditions some drivers have that can affect their livelihood. Although truckers have to undergo medical exams, sometimes the practitioners doing the check-ups are not regulated. Sick or injured drivers are still being cleared to get behind the wheel of big rigs, which could seriously endanger trucking safety standards and all motorists on the road.

Illnesses such as diabetes, sleep apnea and addictions can greatly affect the way truckers perform their jobs. Although it can be unfortunate when doctors cannot approve these individuals to drive, it is a necessary thing to keep everyone protected.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulated various trucking compliance laws and standards, but there is no set rules about trucker health assessment. Some say this is dangerous and a streamlined guide to what is accepted and what is not needs to be implemented.

New truckers who have recently completed their CDL training may wish to get checked out for any health issues that may prohibit them from driving early on, so that they can seek treatment immediately.
