Truck driving safety supported through care packages to trucking troops

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has some high hopes for their annual Truckers for Troops charity campaign this year. Fortunately, they exceeded their goals and managed to raise more than $73,000 per solider, displaying their support for trucker health even when drivers are serving overseas.

The Truckers for Troops initiative was started to assist drivers who also were members of the armed forces. According to the OOIDA’s website, nearly 40 percent of truck drivers in the country also have served in the military. Most of the revenue raised has gone towards care packages given to troops who are stationed away from home during the holiday season.

For three days in the beginning of December, the OOIDA collected donations from individuals and trucking companies. Thousands of dollars were received and put towards the parcels sent to the troops over the holidays.

If truckers and their families still would like to contribute, they may send cards and letters to the OOIDA headquarters in Missouri and they will be sent along to soldiers abroad throughout the winter. New truck drivers who have recently completed their CDL training may want to join up with organizations like these that show support for those involved in the industry that navigate the nation’s highways.
