Truck driver hours regulations created for a reason
With the regulations set to have trucker to record the amount of hours they are on the road created to improve trucker health, many drivers are failing to be honest with their hours driven in order to complete their routes.
Due to drivers lying about the number of hours they are on the road, a number of lawsuits have been created upon drivers breaking those rules. One driver that was caught breaking the rules for the number of hours driven is facing a sentence of a maximum penalty of up to five years in jail, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
"Truck drivers are required to keep a log of their travel to prove they complied with state and federal laws," said Brooks Schuelke, an Austin, Texas, personal injury lawyer. "There are a fair number of cases in which trucker’s or their employers have altered the driving log for trips. In some cases, there are two sets of books; the one for inspectors to see, and the one that reflects the true number of hours a trucker logged."
According to Lafayette, Indiana, CBS affiliate WLFI, the truck driver hours limit were created to prevent tragedies such as a truck driver falling asleep and flipping their trucks, which is what happened on Interstate 65; however, both passengers of the truck were not injured seriously.
