Common driving errors to avoid during the winter

Created: Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 02:01 pm

Harsh winter weather can often cause truckers and motorists to approach the roads in fear of an accident, which is why the Toronto Star recently composed a list of common winter driving mistakes and how to avoid them.

The newspaper said many winter drivers don't slow down when traction is reduced, opting to remain at or near the speed limit even when conditions have worsened. Reducing speed and sticking with the flow of traffic can lessen the chance of an accident.

Another winter driving mistake outlined by the paper is not assessing road conditions. Local radio stations will often discuss road conditions, while drivers can also use common sense to ascertain the severity of tough weather.

Truckers avoiding these common winter driving mistakes can improve truck driving safety, while also looking out for the well-being of other motorists during the winter.

The Lexington Dispatch of Lexington, North Carolina, also recently released tips to help motorists drive during the winter. Thomasville Police Sergeant John Elgin and First Sergeant B.D. Stalvey told the paper that it is a smart practice to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles during a winter storm, to ensure adequate stopping distance.
