Trucking company utilizes new gas source

Fleet management owners often have fuel prices on the mind as increasing costs continue to carve out an uncertain future. In addition to rising gas expenses, some owners have had to modify their business strategies to comply with new federal laws on truck emissions. Recently, a freight hauling company based in Iowa turned to natural gas as a way to overcome these issues, reports the Des Moines Register.

The idea started with a pile of manure. John Ruan III, executive of Ruan Transportation, began collaborating with dairy farmer Mike McCloskey to test whether his cows could help power the company's milk trucks. After three years of experimentation, the business created blend of natural and methane gas that can be used instead of diesel to fuel trucks.

Ben Mclean, senior vice president of Ruan Transportation, says the technology developed may someday ensure trucker health and be used by a growing number of companies in the United States.

"We are very optimistic that our country can produce more of our energy needs domestically, and we will continue to develop CNG transportation solutions across the nation," he said in a press release.
