Truckers avoid tolls to cut costs
A number of truckers traveling through Indiana are avoiding toll roads and taking advantage of alternate routes due to the rising costs of tolls, reported Indiana's NewsCenter.
"I very seldom run the toll roads unless I have to because the cost of fuel is high and the tolls are expensive," truck driver Rick Schlabowske told the source. "You need to cut your expenses as much as you can. U.S. 6 is a really good road coming across, and so is U.S. 30. I choose to take those."
Many truckers avoid tolls and see them as an unnecessary expense, especially if they are responsible for paying the tolls with their own money; however, drivers that have their company pick up the tab on tolls have no problem with the toll roads, reported the news source.
The source said owner-operators that have to pay high prices for tolls and loads practice smart fleet management by avoiding costly travel routes.
Surcharge hikes in New Jersey are also causing drivers to avoid toll roads, with the New Jersey Turnpike increasing rates at the outset of the new year, reported the Daily Record.
