Suggested federal bill could save fleet owners thousands on safety equipment

Trucker health and truck driving safety are key factors to ensuring the industry's reputation remains positive and strong. According to Trucking Info, a new bill is being proposed that would offer tax breaks for business owners who wish to upgrade certain safety features in their trucks.

Both democrats and republican representatives are supporting this tax break in The House. The new law would include discounts on various modifications such as collision warning technology and stability control systems.

Credits can total up to $3,500 per truck and could save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of the year. Many organizations are lobbying for this bill to be passed, including the Commercial Vehicle Alliance and The Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association.

Officials say they hope to decrease the number of lives lost by accidents on the road involving big rigs.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 10 percent of crash fatalities on the road in 2009 involved large trucks. At least 3 percent of all injuries occurred from big rig accidents.
