Green Trucking Summit a place for optimism

Created: Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 01:01 pm

According to Truck News, attendees of the Green Truck Summit hosted by the National Truck Equipment Association and Calstart shared their positive experiences while working with green trucks, which have led to improved fleet management.

One of the companies that has employed green trucking tactics is Frito-Lay, according to Michael O’Connell, senior director of fleet operations with the company. He told the source that Frito-Lay has a goal to cut its fleet-wide fuel consumption in half.

"When we talked about it for the first time, we thought it was a crazy goal," O’Connell told the source. "Our strategy is working extremely well. We’re about 14 percent reduced over the last four years and we’ve grown our business. It works, but it’s not easy."

At the summit, Dr. Steven Chu, U.S. Secretary of Energy, led the discussion about green trucks and about how energy efficient vehicles have moved past the "science project" stage, so trucking companies should begin taking the new technology more seriously, reported the source.

The news source also said Chu broached the subject of rising fuel costs, and what trucking companies can do to cope with high prices at the pump.
