Carriers urge individuals to earn their CDL

Created: Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 05:01 am

Many trucking companies and experts recently announced at the Truckload Carriers Association conference that communication with shippers is a major concern for carriers, Trucking Info reports.

Industry leaders indicated that shippers need to be familiar as carriers are with the complexities of the driver shortage, industry costs, inflation and fuel prices. However, insiders say that many companies are bringing in unemployed workers for training to get a CDL and then begin driving for that particular business.

"We need to work with customers to make them understand that this industry needs reinvestment. It is a difficult mission but if all speak loud and clear there's a great opportunity that we will have breakthrough," Kevin Knight of Knight Transportation, told the news source.

Individuals who are looking to break into the industry may wish to enroll in CDL training and online truck driver training courses to help make them more attractive to potential employers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in transportation and material moving occupations are expected to increase by nearly 13 percent over the next seven years, which equates to more than 1,400 available jobs.
