Warning letters a provision of CSA 2010

Created: Monday, January 10th, 2011 02:01 pm

As part of CSA 2010, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be sending letters to commercial vehicle operators who are above threshold in one or more categories that are outlined in the new regulations. As a result, some organizations are attempting to prepare local fleets to receive - and avoid - these notices.

According to Iowa Truck Services - the safety and compliance department of the Iowa Motor Truck Association - operators are ranked using the FMCSA's seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). These include unsafe driving, fatigued driving based on hours of service, driver fitness, vehicle maintenance, controlled substances and alcohol as well as cargo-related and crash indicator.

Professionals who are ranked outside federally determined ranges for these criteria can expect letters, which identify the violations and warn that an investigation or punishment could ensue if the issues are not corrected.

Officials from Iowa Truck Services expect that more than 500 operators who are based in the state will receive these notices in the coming months.

Don Egli, director of safety for the Iowa Motor Truck Association, said that this provision can enable drivers to take "an unobtrusive approach to correcting their shortcomings before the FMCSA comes knocking on their door."
