Trucking companies going the extra mile for drug testing

To reduce the amount of accidents on the road, some trucking companies are going a step further than having their employees take compliance training for truck drivers or other trucking safety coursework. For example, one company based in Washington will be continually testing its current and future drivers for illegal substances through hair samples in an effort to boost its safety and health standards.

There are requirements mandated by the federal Department of Transportation about drug screenings, but some companies, like Gordon Trucking, are going beyond these laws to keep their drivers and all motors on the highways extra protected.

Gordon Trucking has been named one of the leading big rig fleets in the country, and says it wants to continue this drug testing practice with the goal of improving its accident statistics among their new drivers.

Scott Manthey, vice president of safety and compliance for the business, says data illustrates that most mishaps happen during the beginning of one’s trucking career, so removing any temptation of using substances while navigating a big rig will help these drivers learn the ropes with a clear head.

"After considerable research, Gordon Trucking concluded that it was our responsibility to raise the bar for driver screening," he said.
