BASIC scores for large carriers found to be lower than smaller trucking companies
A recent report from TransCore, which is a transportation solutions provider, shows that there are significant state and regional difference in specific Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC) scores, according to Trucking Info.
The reports found that larger carriers had significantly lower BASIC scores than their smaller counterparts. Furthermore, some companies were rated more harshly in certain states than in others.
Carriers were scored in several categories, including operators' use of controlled substances, unsafe driving, fatigued driving, and vehicle maintenance. The six states with the highest carrier alerts for controlled substances included Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia.
Officials told the news source that the net effect of the new safety program is that the size of the carrier and the location of its domicile and routes are most important to a carrier's safety score.
Safety directors can enroll their employees in online truck driver training courses, which could help them understand industry-wide rules and regulations as well as CSA 2010 compliance standards.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, more than 3 million roadside inspections from state police were conducted in 2010.
